Reputation Risk and Water

Reputation risk for companies is an underestimated consequence of global concern about climate change. Rather than expending more inventive energy on denying a relationship between CO2 concentrations and global temperature, smart businesses should be looking for ways to gain come reputation capital by managing climate change risks in cooperation with communities and global agencies.

Last week, the UN Global Compact and the Pacific Institute released a short paper on climate change and its impact on water which recommends a number of sensible management strategies. The context for the paper is the statement that:

“There is overwhelming scientific evidence that burning fossil fuels has altered the chemistry of the atmosphere. Figure 1 shows that atmospheric CO2 concentrations are reaching levels that are likely higher than in the last 20 million years.Rising CO2 concentrations along with other greenhouse gases (GHG) are changing the planet’s climate. Global mean temperatures have increased three-quarters of a degree Celsius since 1900 and 11 of the 12 warmest years since 1850 have occurred since 1996.These climatic changes are expected to accelerate over the coming decades.”

The paper argues that a significant body of scientific evidence suggests climate change will affect the scarcity, sustainability and quality of the global water supply, which increases business risk, especially with respect to energy supply management, raw material inventories, industrial production systems and the associated financing costs.

Reputation risks can easily follow, for example as “people become more aware of their rights to access water . . . local businesses may find themselves using copious amounts of water in regions where people lack sufficient water to meet basic needs.”

The paper outlines some business strategies which mirror two dominant themes on how businesses today need to think of corporate responsibility (CR): CR as part of business strategy discussions (integrating “water and climate change into strategic business planning and operational activities”) and engagement of stakeholders in responsible planning (engaging “key stakeholders as a part of water and climate risk assessment, long-term planning and implementation activities”).

MARKETING ON THE WEB

by Elitsa Mihaylova*

International businesses have witnessed a major change in the way traditional marketing is taught and carried out in the last few years. Not only has the Internet changed the way business is done, but it has also greatly affected the marketing strategy of each and every company. Those who dared underestimate the importance and capacity of this new generation of marketing have probably already lost a lot of sales and interest in their businesses. Web marketing embraces website marketing, but also includes banner advertising, email marketing and other specific tricks to maximise the Internet to market a company's products or services. Web marketing is a follower of traditional marketing in many ways. It focuses on preliminary research, identification of target groups, development of a marketing strategy, and so on. The idea, however, remains the same – create a strong relationship between the business and the customer via the IT method of marketing.

Of particular interest to Internet marketers are the ways consumers behave and shop online. There's far more interaction and participation before, during and after every Internet purchase, while consumers are communicating with other users and company representatives more and more each day. But just like any marketing campaign, targeting and suitability is of great importance. For example, older audiences would like to read long pages of content and not deal with rich media and complicated new stuff.

On the contrary, younger audiences require recent technological innovations like rich media, as they demand more information, more control and more influence in the ways products and services are marketed and sold on the Internet. Knowing how fickle customers are, marketers must use innovations on websites with clarity to meet the expectations of the customer.

Social interaction also has a dramatic effect on any Internet marketing campaign. Whether it's on popular social media such as MySpace, YouTube, Linked-In or Facebook, your product or service is being discussed, analysed, praised and criticised. These sites, along with blogs and forums, provide an opportunity for the marketer to interact with an enthusiastic audience, discover their needs and desires, and build brand awareness. Today's smart marketer should monitor carefully and continuously what is being said on the Internet about their products and services and make ongoing adjustments to their campaigns. Indeed, social networks are gaining more and more popularity with every passing day. Some of them are highly respected communities.

One of the most effective and widely used methods of marketing on the web is banner advertising. This is not a new and exciting opportunity, but it has always worked well. Data has indicated that for every website produced, approximately five banners are released. It is also interesting that most companies are willing to pay large amounts for banner production and to publish them on partners' websites. This is quite odd as they would never spend that amount on SEO or usability. Banner ads may flash, move and attract audiences in a strange way, but attract they still do, and are therefore part of a good marketing strategy.

Talking about web marketing, it is time to present one of the most important means of communication today and its use in online marketing. Every self respecting business manager uses email today. One of its main advantages is that sending a message to someone is fast, reliable and, most importantly, cheap. Getting a potential client's email address is one of the top tasks of every website's team today. In this way companies are able to create databases with a targeted email list and later use it for their marketing purposes. Before you can keep in touch, you need to build a database. Before you build a database, you have to give people a reason to give you their contact information, whether it is with an e-magazine, weekly tips and articles of interest, or a web seminar. Once you have someone in your database you must continually create value and trust. This doesn't happen with one article, one tip or one short message. It will happen when it becomes your way of doing business. Email marketing is not spam. Email marketing is when someone has provided their email address with the intention of receiving further emails from a particular company, and sustaining communication.

A relatively new marketing approach should also be mentioned and explored. This is the so-called RSS feeds, which can be used to market a website. RSS is important when a website user decides that, instead of visiting a particular website every day and reading news and articles about certain items of interest, they could receive this information in due course through another portal that provides RSS. RSS provides a powerful information management tool that bypasses the increasingly crowded and annoying email channel. Having your favourite websites, media outlets and blogs feeding RSS is your own customised way of accessing exactly what you want to see.

The Web can be a powerful resource for a company's business. Taking advantage of the existing tactics mentioned above in combination with your IT and marketing departments will give you the competitive edge required to effectively position your company on the Web.

Marketing - essential for business triumph

by marketing marbles

You know your company makes the greatest item of its type and are certain of it. Taking that fact into account, you see no actual motive to invest a lot of money into commercializing. You’re certain the product will speak for itself.

Error! You could, as a matter of fact, produce the greatest, most affordable, highest performing product of its kind on the entire Earth and still not make a single sale. If you do not take some time to talk about your product and market it to masses, they just won’t buy. Masses must be sold on an item to actually purchase it.

Marketing is an vital charge for any prosperous business enterprise. Although there are many methods of marketing that could pay off, some campaigns will show greater results than others. Even if your item is a great one to a certain degree and you gain word of mouth and referral advertising from customers as a result, it is still critical to back this up with constant reminders.

Look at companies that have become renowned and trusted on an international level with their products and services. Masses immediately discern their signs, their items and even their presentation strategies without the need for further marketing. Nevertheless, these companies keep running tv and radio commercials, they buy newspaper advertisements and those companies may even sponsor a lot of public events.

They know they must continue to be in the public eye to stick to the pinnacle of their industry. Even if they have hit the level of being the best of the best in regard to sales, they won’t ease up on marketing.

The greatest companies on the planet would not even provide the greatest quality items for the price, they simply obtain the business nonetheless because of the advertising efforts they employ.

How do they do?

Although average marketing campaigns will create reasonable results, they more often than not won’t drive a product to the pinnacle of its field. Extremely successful companies run marketing campaigns that go well beyond the common and they use approaches you and your marketers may be ignorant of.

What is it that misunderstand and successful companies and their marketers are aware of?

Productive campaigns not simply sell products, they sell emotions too, connect with individuals on a subconscious degree and even compel them to buy by utilizing the techniques of influence. Although the tv commercials and magazine advertisements exploited by the business elite may appear fairly comparable to the ones you have viewed, their systems have a tendency to contact individuals on a different degree and they keep doing it through compelling campaigns.

It is possible to get sales without employing marketing campaigns. Whenever you wish to have your entreprise truly triumph, nevertheless, advertising will be essential. To enjoy even better success, it is rewarding to examine the secrets that the successful marketers are familiar with and you may have overlooked.

If you too would like to use the best emotional response marketing techniques and push your online business to the top, then, you may not like this but you would be the very first to agree that you need a best Internet marketing optimization course. And here’s the shortest way to get yours

5 Things You Need to Know About Social Media Marketing and PR

by JENNA BOLLER

I've been to several recent client and prospect meetings where we've discussed strategies for incorporating social media programs into marketing and communications roadmaps. In most cases, the client or prospect has heard about social media and falls into one of two categories (or both):

1. They want to tap into social media because they recognize it's part of being on the cutting edge of marketing and PR.

2. They want to use social media to sell more products.

That's when I feel compelled to start talking about the "underbelly" of the beast. Social media is more than being hip and fun and cool. It's also more than just another set of channels for making sales. Most importantly – it's a lot of work.

We've spent a lot of time at Page One PR trying to figure out ways to measure the influence of social media programs, and we've been pretty successful coming up with metrics and strategiesfor providing real value to clients who want social media as another set of tools in their marketing and communications arsenal.

If you're thinking of exploring social media for your company, go for it! But before you do that, here are five important tips you need to know:

1. Social media requires a willingness and readiness to engage.
When it comes to social media, many companies want us to "just do it" for them. Good luck. Social media programs aren't the same as just writing a press release or developing a media pitch. When you begin to engage with people, they want to interact with YOU – they want to see personalities at a company, not just a corporate image. This requires a level of transparency from the CEO down to engineering that can't be forged by the PR firm. Be prepared to conduct business this way if you want to be successful with social media.

2. Your audience might not naturally pay attention.
A lot of companies know this but don't understand the number of cycles that go into running social media programs and campaigns. They think that blogging, YouTube and Twitter are ways to push out their messages without realizing no one will care unless they promote content daily. Maintaining a day-to-day social media presence (and relevance) requires loyally following four key steps: produce content, push content through social media channels, actively monitor the channels you want to leverage and respond FAST. Rinse and repeat.

3. Social media never stops.
Social media demands a fair amount of interaction if you want to build relationships with your target audiences and get their attention. Companies often drastically underestimate the resources required to build successful social media channels. They want to generate buzz around a major announcement, but then want to "turn off" until their next bit of news. They don't want to respond to questions or create new content until it benefits their bottom line. You can't do that with social media. Don't be surprised when people demand that you pay attention to them before they'll care about you.

4. Social media requires A LOT of planning.
Building your brand with social media can be a lot of fun, but the planning process can be pretty exhausting. In fact, expect any social media program to take at least 2.5x the amount of time and resources a traditional PR approach normally would. You need to plan ahead. After you've identified your target audiences and the key messages you want to communicate to each audience, multiply those by the number of channels you plan to use and develop metrics to measure your success. Your content should be cross-linked and distributed in sync or according to a detailed choreography. Then, monitor and have guidelines for response.

5. Social media is everyone's responsibility.
A mistake companies often make is taking the "it's not my job" attitude. Executives, engineers, salesmen, product managers, business development employees will often pigeon-hole social media into the marketing and communications bucket. Even marketing directors and VPs will avoid being accountable. Social media enables your audience to ask questions, challenge your claims, offer helpful product feedback and share their opinions with their network of friends and followers. Companies that are successful with social media have resources in every department to immediately address questions and issues that come in through social media channels. If you're starting up a social media program, share with your company what you want to accomplish and tell everyone how they can help.

Social Media in Action
We recently had an incident where an IT manager was having trouble installing a client's product and began expressing negative frustration on Twitter about the company's product. We alerted the VP of marketing at the client who immediately called the guy and put him in touch with a sales engineer. The customer started tweeting about how impressive the client's customer service was and began offering incredibly positive feedback about the product on Twitter. This is one of several examples of how social media can be effective if you've got the right internal lines of communication open and the resources to reach out to your community.

TheTakeaway
While social media can have an incredibly heavy underbelly, it provides a remarkably effective way to reach and engage with your target audiences. In addition, as we continue to see traditional print and online media outlets dry up, you'll notice that the results from social media outreach done well can transcend what you've come to expect from traditional PR. Even better, beyond just "counting clips," you can quantify social media results with metrics and your own Google Analytics. So, as you get on board with social media, remember that the amount of energy, planning and resources required to fuel a successful social media campaign can give you the return on investment you want at exactly the moment you need it. Plus, it can really be a lot of fun.
